The Best Mics I Use For Mobile Video
In my experience, mobile sound without a good mic is relatively awful and from that, I tested several dozen mics. From that, the mics below are the ones I feel are the easiest to use and the most powerful in terms of sound!
After shooting tens of thousands of videos I’ve compiled a list of what I think are the best Mics available.
It comes down to how many people you’re shooting with and what kind of project you’re using it for.
Let’s start with Lapel Mics.
We generally use a lapel mic for interviews, selfie style videos and one person segments.
The one I’d recommend and that has never let me down is the Rode Smart Lav +
The lapel mic can be used in two different ways.
- You can attach it to your phone directly via the cord it comes with. Though I’d recommend getting an extension cord for it.
- You can use one phone to record the audio and shoot the video with another. Then splice it together with iMovie for final cut.
Shotgun Style Mobile Mics
Sometimes we have a project with multiple people, movement and the need for being freed from the cord.
For that, I’d recommend a mobile shotgun style mic. These Mics generally attach to your phone directly and point in the direction of the action.
The mobile shotgun mic I recommend for those without an iPhone is the Rode Video Mic Me. If you haven’t noticed I’m a huge fan of Rode Mics due to their amazing sound and high-quality products.
For those with an iPhone I'd recommend the Shure MV88. This mic comes with an app that allows you to adjust the setting based on the environment that you're recording in and has incredible sound quality!
You won’t need to splice the audio in at all and can shoot sometime up to 3-4 feet away and still pull off quality sound.
Mobile Podcasting Mics
Lastly, let’s talk mobile podcasting Mics. For those you’re usually looking for a mic that can be carried around, is lightweight and portable and of course, produces great sound.
In this category, I’d recommend the Blue Raspberry. It’s a great mic that folds neatly into a case, is very small and produces sound that rivals very high-end Mics.
The raspberry attaches directly to your phone and allows you a clean and easy solution for mobile podcasting.
The alternative is you’re podcasting alone is to use a lapel mic for the podcasting and the Rode Recorder or Reporter app to get quality sound.
I chose these Mics because they’re relatively inexpensive, easy to use and are generally plug and play. So you won’t pull your hair out trying to figure out how to use them!
